The Coastal Discovery Center at San Simeon Bay was conceived and created with the goal of educating the public. A dedicated group of docents are on hand to aid with interpretation of the exhibits and other topics pertaining to the main theme of the Discovery Center which is: “The meeting of the land and sea”. The docents have been recruited from the local community and bring a wealth of knowledge and talent from widely varied backgrounds and professions. The docents are taught that through education, visitors will enhance their respect for the environment and develop a sense of stewardship. Extensive training sessions help prepare docents by giving them the necessary background skills and knowledge. The training was done by experts in their field brought in by the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Enrichment classes are given periodically to the volunteers for furthering their own personal knowledge and enjoyment. Discovery Center docents have also been invaluable in helping the staff complete, update and plan for new exhibits and programs. Examples of outreach programs prepared and given by docents include special tours and activities for school groups, and “pier walks”.
